Beta hCG Pregnancy Blood Test in Sharjah
Medically reviewed by Dar Al Kamal Team
What is a beta hCG pregnancy blood test?
A beta hCG pregnancy blood test measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood. hCG is made by the cells that go on to form the placenta, starting soon after a fertilised egg implants in the lining of the womb. The "beta" refers to the part of the hormone the test detects, which is specific to hCG.
A home urine test answers one question: is hCG present above a set threshold? A quantitative blood test gives a number. That number allows a doctor to compare two samples and see how the level is changing, and the change between results often says more about an early pregnancy than any single value.
At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, beta hCG is measured in the hospital laboratory, which runs 24 hours a day and accepts walk-ins for most routine tests.
Who needs it
A doctor orders a beta hCG test in several situations:
- Confirming an early pregnancy, particularly after fertility treatment, when an exact level is useful from the start.
- Bleeding or pain in early pregnancy, where two or more timed results, together with an ultrasound, help show how the pregnancy is progressing.
- A pregnancy that is too early to see on a scan. Doctors call this a pregnancy of unknown location, and serial hCG results guide the next scan.
- Follow-up after a miscarriage or treatment of an ectopic pregnancy, with repeat tests until hCG returns to a non-pregnant level.
- Before surgery, an X-ray or certain medicines, to confirm a pregnancy status so that care can be planned safely.
Once a pregnancy is confirmed and progressing, your care moves to antenatal care with the obstetrics team.
What happens
The test uses one small blood sample from a vein in your arm. The skin is cleaned, a tourniquet is applied for a moment, and the blood is drawn into a tube. A plaster and gentle pressure finish the draw.
Your sample is labelled and analysed in the Dar Al Kamal Hospital laboratory. Beta hCG is a routine test, and results are often available the same day. The result goes to the doctor who requested it, who explains it with you.
When the trend matters, your doctor asks for a second sample a couple of days after the first, at the same laboratory. Using one laboratory for every sample keeps results directly comparable, because different laboratory methods can report slightly different values. Your doctor may add a transvaginal or abdominal pregnancy scan once the level suggests a pregnancy should be visible.
Preparing for it
A beta hCG blood test needs no fasting and can be taken at any time of day. Drinking water beforehand makes the vein easier to find.
Useful things to have ready:
- The first day of your last period, or the date of any embryo transfer or insemination, so the result can be read against the right timeline.
- A list of your medicines. Tell your doctor about any fertility injections, because an hCG trigger injection can remain detectable in the blood for some days and affect an early result.
- Previous hCG results, with the date and laboratory, so your doctor sees the whole series.
- Your Emirates ID, insurance card and request form.
For repeat tests, try to attend at a similar time of day as the first sample. Because the laboratory is open 24 hours, a repeat that falls on a weekend or a public holiday can still go ahead on the right day.
Afterwards
You can go back to your usual day straight after the draw. A small bruise at the needle site is common and settles on its own.
Your doctor contacts you with the result and the plan, which may be a repeat test, a scan appointment, or booking into antenatal care. Keep a note of each result and its date.
Go to the emergency department straight away if, while waiting for results in early pregnancy, you have severe or one-sided abdominal pain, pain in the tip of the shoulder, heavy bleeding, or you feel faint or collapse. These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage that needs urgent care. Contact the hospital for advice about lighter bleeding or cramping.
Cost and insurance
Many UAE insurance plans cover a beta hCG test when a doctor orders it for symptoms, for monitoring early pregnancy or before a procedure. Tests linked to fertility treatment may fall under a fertility exclusion, and maternity benefits on some plans carry waiting periods. Frequently asked questions
Are there any risks with a beta hCG blood test?
A beta hCG blood test carries the minor risks of any blood draw: brief discomfort, bruising, light-headedness and, rarely, infection at the needle site. The test itself cannot harm a pregnancy.
Can a beta hCG result tell me whether the pregnancy is healthy?
A single beta hCG result cannot show whether a pregnancy is healthy or where it is growing. The pattern of rising or falling levels over repeat tests, together with an ultrasound, gives that information, and your doctor interprets the combination.
Is a blood test more accurate than a home pregnancy test?
A blood hCG test can detect pregnancy a few days earlier than many home urine tests and gives a measured level. A positive home test is usually reliable, and the blood test adds the number needed to follow the trend.
Why do I need two hCG tests?
Two hCG tests show the direction and speed of change, which a single number cannot. In a progressing early pregnancy the level usually rises steadily, while a level that plateaus or falls leads your doctor to look more closely with a scan.
Can the level be positive without a pregnancy?
A positive hCG without a current pregnancy is uncommon but possible, for example after an hCG trigger injection, shortly after a miscarriage, or with some rare medical conditions. Your doctor considers these if the result does not fit the picture.
Does a high hCG level mean twins?
A higher hCG level can occur with twins, but levels vary widely between healthy single pregnancies, so the number alone cannot confirm twins. An ultrasound confirms how many babies there are.
Why should repeat tests be at the same laboratory?
Different laboratories can use different methods that report slightly different hCG values from the same blood. Using one laboratory for a series keeps the results comparable, so the trend your doctor reads is real.
