Brightening Facial in Sharjah

What is a brightening facial?
A brightening facial is a facial designed for skin that looks dull, patchy or darker in some areas than others. It combines a gentle exfoliation, which lifts away the tired surface cells that scatter light unevenly, with a brightening serum or mask that works on pigment. Common active ingredients in brightening products include vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid and plant extracts that slow the skin's production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour.
Pigment forms in the deeper part of the outer skin and rises to the surface slowly. For this reason a brightening facial works as a course: each session removes pigmented surface cells and treats the skin that is forming beneath.
At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, brightening facials are performed in-house by the aesthetic department, which works alongside dermatology when a patch of pigment needs a medical look first.
Who needs it
A brightening facial suits people with:
- a dull, grey or tired complexion
- uneven tone, where the cheeks, forehead or upper lip are darker than the rest of the face
- sun spots and freckles that have darkened with time outdoors
- dark marks left behind after spots or insect bites have healed, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- melasma, the symmetrical brown patches on the cheeks and forehead linked to hormones, sun and heat
Melasma and post-inflammatory marks are especially common in the UAE, because strong sunlight, heat and visible light all stimulate pigment cells, and medium to darker skin types produce pigment readily. A brightening facial can be combined with other treatments. A stronger resurfacing option is described on the chemical peels page, and the team explains which suits your skin.
What happens
Your first visit starts with a skin assessment. The practitioner looks at the pattern of pigment, asks about sun exposure, hormones, medicines and your current skincare, and photographs the skin so progress can be compared later. Any single spot that looks different from the others is checked by a doctor before treatment.
A typical session then follows these steps:
- Double cleanse to remove sunscreen, makeup and oil.
- Exfoliation with a mild enzyme or fruit-acid solution, which may tingle briefly.
- Brightening serum or mask, left on the skin for a set time while you rest.
- Soothing and hydration with a calming mask or moisturiser.
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen, applied before you leave.
The session is relaxing and uses no needles. You can return to work the same day.
Preparing for it
Arrive with a record of the creams and serums you use, including any lightening products bought online or abroad, because some contain strong ingredients that affect how the skin reacts. Retinoids and exfoliating acids are usually paused for a few days before each session. Avoid facial waxing and threading beforehand, and tell the team about recent sunburn, cold sores or skin irritation.
Sunscreen is part of the preparation. Starting daily broad-spectrum sunscreen before the course, and keeping to it throughout, protects the results of each session. A tinted sunscreen adds protection against visible light, which also darkens melasma.
Afterwards
The skin may look slightly pink or feel tight for a few hours after a brightening facial. Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser that evening, and wear sunscreen every morning, reapplying it through the day if you are outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat and shade matter in Sharjah, where heat itself can darken melasma, so hot yoga, saunas and long periods in the midday sun are best kept to a minimum during the course.
The team gives you a home-care routine to use between sessions, usually a brightening serum in the morning and a gentle product at night. Progress is reviewed against your first photographs, and the course is adjusted as the skin responds.
Contact the hospital if the treated skin becomes painful, blistered or increasingly red, or if new dark patches appear after a session. A mole or dark spot that grows, bleeds, itches or changes colour needs a doctor's review; contact the hospital promptly rather than treating it with brightening products.
Cost and insurance
A brightening facial for cosmetic reasons is usually self-pay, as UAE insurance plans generally exclude cosmetic skin treatments. The overall cost depends on the number of sessions in your course and the home-care products chosen. A medical consultation for an unusual or changing spot may be claimable, subject to your policy. Frequently asked questions
What are the risks of a brightening facial?
A brightening facial can cause temporary redness, stinging, dryness or irritation, and an allergic reaction to an ingredient is possible. In medium and darker skin, irritation itself can trigger new dark marks, which is why the exfoliation is kept gentle and sensitive areas are tested first. Tell the team about any reaction to a previous facial.
Can a brightening facial remove melasma completely?
A brightening facial can lighten melasma, but melasma is a long-term tendency that tends to return with sun, heat and hormonal changes. Daily sunscreen and ongoing home care are needed to keep it under control, and deeper melasma responds more slowly than surface pigment.
How many sessions of brightening facial will I need?
The number of brightening facial sessions depends on the type and depth of your pigment, and it is planned after the first assessment. Pigment fades gradually as the skin renews, so a course of sessions is more usual than a single visit.
Does a brightening facial bleach the skin?
A brightening facial does not bleach the skin or change your natural skin colour. It works on excess pigment in darker patches so that the tone becomes more even, while the rest of the skin stays its own shade.
Are skin-lightening creams bought online safe to use alongside it?
Skin-lightening creams bought online are sometimes found to contain undeclared steroids, mercury or high-strength ingredients that can damage the skin. Bring any product you use to your appointment so the team can check it before your course starts.
Can I have a brightening facial during pregnancy?
A brightening facial during pregnancy is possible with adjusted ingredients, as some acids and retinoids are avoided. Pregnancy often darkens pigment, and the team may suggest a gentle routine now and a fuller course after delivery and breastfeeding.
Should a dark spot be checked before a brightening facial?
A dark spot that looks different from your other marks, has an irregular edge or has changed recently should be checked by a doctor before any brightening treatment. The practitioner looks for these features at the first assessment and arranges a doctor's review at the hospital when needed.
