Frequently asked questions

What are the risks and limits of a radiology report?

A radiology report is a doctor's expert opinion on the images, and like any medical opinion it can carry uncertainty. Some findings cannot be fully characterised on one scan, which is why reports sometimes use cautious wording or recommend a further test. A report also cannot be interpreted safely on its own, because the meaning of a finding depends on your symptoms and examination. No radiation is involved in discussing a report.

Can I meet the radiologist who reported my scan?

At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, your scan report is explained by the doctor who requested the scan, who knows your symptoms and history. When a question about the images remains, your doctor discusses the scan directly with the reporting radiologist, who may clarify the finding or add an addendum to the report.

What does "unremarkable" mean on a scan report?

"Unremarkable" on a radiology report means normal. It tells you the radiologist looked at that part of the body and found nothing of concern. Similarly, "no acute abnormality" means no sudden or urgent problem, such as a fresh fracture or bleeding, was seen.

My report says "degenerative changes". Is that serious?

Degenerative changes on a scan report usually describe normal wear that comes with age, such as thinning cartilage or small bony spurs in the spine or joints. They are very common in people with no pain at all. Your doctor explains whether they are relevant to your symptoms.

What does "clinical correlation recommended" mean?

"Clinical correlation recommended" means the radiologist is asking your doctor to match the finding against your symptoms, examination and other tests. It does not mean something is wrong. It reflects that a scan shows structure, while your doctor sees the whole picture.

What is an incidental finding?

An incidental finding is something seen on a scan that was not the reason for the scan, such as a small cyst in the kidney or liver. Most incidental findings are harmless and common. The report may recommend a follow-up scan to confirm a finding is stable, and your doctor explains whether any action is needed.

Is a report consultation covered by insurance?

A radiology report is usually discussed during a follow-up consultation, which most UAE insurance plans cover, although some plans limit follow-up visits. Confirm your cover with Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah on 06 599 7777.
