Frequently asked questions

Are there any risks with semen analysis?

Semen analysis carries no physical risk, because it only examines a sample you provide. The main limitation is that sperm quality varies from sample to sample, so one result can be misleading, and a clinician usually confirms an abnormal result with a repeat test.

Why might I need a second semen analysis?

A second semen analysis is common because sperm count and movement change naturally between samples, with illness, and with the length of abstinence. Clinicians usually repeat the test after an interval before drawing conclusions from an abnormal result.

Can a normal semen analysis prove I am fertile?

A normal semen analysis cannot prove fertility, because it measures sperm numbers, movement and shape but not every aspect of how sperm function. It does make a major male factor less likely, and your clinician reads it together with your partner's assessment.

Does an abnormal result mean I cannot have children?

An abnormal semen analysis does not by itself mean you cannot have children. Many men with low counts or reduced movement father children naturally or with treatment, and the result guides which assessment and options come next.

Can I collect the sample at home?

Home collection is possible in some cases if your clinician agrees, but the sample must reach the laboratory quickly and at body temperature, so collection at the hospital usually gives the most reliable result. Ask the laboratory for instructions before collecting at home.

Is the sample kept private?

Semen samples are handled confidentially, labelled with your identity details and processed only by laboratory staff for the tests your clinician requested. The report goes to the clinician who referred you.

What does "no sperm seen" mean?

A report of no sperm in the sample is called azoospermia. It is confirmed on a repeat sample, and then assessed further with hormone tests and an examination, because it can come from a blockage or from reduced sperm production, which are managed differently.
