Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of patch testing?

Patch testing is low risk. The main risks are itching or a strong red reaction at a positive site, temporary darkening or lightening of the skin at that site, a flare of your existing rash, and, rarely, becoming newly sensitised to an allergen during the test. Severe whole-body reactions are very rare with patch testing.

What can patch testing not show?

Patch testing cannot show immediate allergies such as hay fever, food allergy, hives or reactions within minutes of contact, which need prick or blood tests. It also cannot detect irritant dermatitis, which is skin damage from washing, detergents or friction without an allergy. A negative patch test therefore helps too, by pointing towards irritation.

Is patch testing the same as a skin prick test?

Patch testing and skin prick testing are different tests. Patch testing looks for delayed contact allergy and is read over several days, while prick testing looks for immediate allergy and is read within minutes.

Does a positive patch test mean I am allergic for life?

A positive patch test usually means a long-lasting sensitivity, so the allergen is best avoided long term. The dermatologist confirms whether the positive result is relevant to your rash before advising you to change products.

Can I patch test for hair dye allergy?

Patch testing can check for allergy to the common chemical in dark hair dyes, which also appears in black henna. If you have reacted to hair dye before, avoid home skin-strand tests and ask your dermatologist about patch testing instead.

Can children have patch testing?

Children can have patch testing when a contact allergy is suspected, using a series adapted to their age and exposures. For food or airborne allergies in children, child allergy testing through the pediatric team is the usual route.

Can I shower during patch testing?

You can shower the front of your body and wash your hair carefully, but the back must stay dry until the final reading. Wet patches can peel off or give unreliable results.
