Arm Lift in Sharjah

What is an arm lift?
An arm lift, known medically as brachioplasty, is a skin-tightening operation for the upper arm. The surgeon removes an ellipse of loose skin and the fat beneath it from the underside of the arm, between the armpit and the elbow, then draws the remaining skin together to give a slimmer, firmer contour. Where the loose skin continues into the armpit and down the side of the chest, the operation can be extended along the chest wall to treat that area too.
Skin that has stretched a long way loses its elasticity, so exercise tones the muscle underneath while the loose layer over it stays in place. An arm lift removes that loose layer directly. Where the arm has firm skin and a fatty upper arm, liposuction alone may be enough; where skin and fat are both present, the two are often combined in one operation.
At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, brachioplasty is performed in-house by the surgical team of the plastic surgery department, and it often forms one part of a wider body contouring plan.
Who needs it
An arm lift suits adults with loose, hanging skin under the upper arms, often called "bingo wings", that moves when they wave, rubs against the chest, collects sweat or makes sleeves uncomfortable. The largest group is people who have lost a great deal of weight, including after bariatric surgery. Others have loose arm skin from ageing or from genetics.
Timing matters. The best moment is once your weight has been stable for several months, because further weight loss loosens the skin again. After bariatric surgery, the surgeon also looks for good nutrition and healthy blood levels, since wound healing relies on both.
The surgeon uses a simple pinch test and examines the arm with it held out to the side, to judge how much skin is loose, where it sits and how much fat lies underneath. Alternatives include liposuction for mainly fatty arms, a short-scar lift in the armpit for mild looseness near the top of the arm, and supportive compression sleeves. Leaving the arms as they are is also a valid choice. The main trade-off with an arm lift is the scar, so the decision rests on whether the smoother contour matters more to you than a visible line on the arm.
What happens
The first visit is a consultation with Dr. Hamid Esmaeil, Specialist General & Cosmetic Surgeon. He reviews your weight history, health, medicines and smoking, examines both arms, and discusses where the scar will lie. The usual choice is between a scar in the groove on the inner side of the arm, which is hidden when the arm rests against the body, and one placed slightly towards the back of the arm, which is less visible to people standing in front of you. You choose together, and photographs may be taken for your records with your consent.
On the day of surgery, the planned lines are marked on your arms while you sit with your arms raised. The arm lift is performed at Dar Al Kamal Hospital under general anaesthesia. The surgeon removes the marked skin and fat, adds liposuction where planned, closes the wound in layers, and applies dressings and compression garments to both arms. The team tells you beforehand whether you go home the same day or stay overnight.
Preparing for it
- Stop smoking and nicotine products well ahead of surgery, since they reduce blood flow to the healing skin.
- Bring a list of your medicines and supplements, including vitamins prescribed after bariatric surgery.
- Choose loose clothing with wide sleeves or front buttons, because raising the arms is uncomfortable at first.
- Prepare your home so everyday items sit at waist height, and arrange help with lifting, cooking and children for the first weeks.
- Plan time off work around your job: desk work usually resumes sooner than driving or work that needs lifting or raised arms.
- Choose your timing, since many people in the UAE avoid recovering during Ramadan fasting or the peak summer heat.
Afterwards
Swelling, bruising and tightness along the arms are expected at first, and some swelling may reach the forearms and hands. Resting with your arms raised on pillows helps it settle. You wear the compression sleeves as instructed and increase arm movement gradually, with lifting and upper-body exercise resumed as your surgeon advises. The scar starts pink and firm and fades gradually over many months. Keep the armpit area clean and dry, as heat and sweat in Sharjah make this region prone to irritation.
Follow-up visits take place at Dar Al Kamal Hospital with the surgeon who operated, to check the wounds and advise on scar care.
Contact the hospital promptly if a wound opens, leaks or becomes red and hot, if one arm becomes much more swollen or painful than the other, if your hand turns pale, cold or numb, or if you develop a fever. Go to the nearest emergency department straight away if you have chest pain or sudden breathlessness.
Cost and insurance
An arm lift is usually treated as cosmetic surgery in the UAE, so it is typically self-funded. Where loose skin causes repeated skin infections or rashes that your doctor has documented, some policies may review cover with pre-approval, though this is uncommon. After your consultation, the team gives you a written estimate for the operation, garments and follow-up. Call Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah on 06 599 7777 to discuss.

Frequently asked questions
What are the risks of an arm lift?
An arm lift carries the general risks of surgery and anaesthesia, such as bleeding, infection, blood clots and delayed healing. Specific risks include a wide, raised or stretched scar, fluid collecting under the skin, uneven arms, and numbness of the inner arm or forearm from irritation of a small skin nerve. Smoking and poor nutrition raise the risk of wound problems, and the surgeon explains your own risks before consent.
How visible is the arm lift scar?
The arm lift scar is permanent and runs along the underside of the upper arm, from the armpit towards the elbow. It is placed to be hidden when the arms rest at your sides, but it can show in sleeveless clothing and when the arms are raised. It fades over many months.
Can I just lose weight or exercise instead of an arm lift?
Exercise strengthens the arm muscles, and weight loss reduces fat, but neither tightens skin that has stretched a long way. If the arm skin is firm and the concern is fat, liposuction or lifestyle change may be enough.
Is an arm lift the same as arm liposuction?
An arm lift removes loose skin and some fat and leaves a scar along the arm. Arm liposuction removes fat through small openings and relies on the skin shrinking back, so it suits firm skin. The two are often combined.
When can I drive after an arm lift?
You can drive after an arm lift once you can turn the wheel fully and brake quickly without pain, and you are no longer taking painkillers that cause drowsiness. Confirm the timing with your surgeon, as it varies between people.
Is an arm lift covered by insurance?
An arm lift is usually considered cosmetic and excluded from UAE health insurance, so it is self-funded. Occasionally, documented skin infections caused by loose arm skin lead a policy to review cover with pre-approval. Call 06 599 7777 to check.
Can an arm lift be done with other procedures?
An arm lift can be combined with liposuction of the arms, and sometimes with other body contouring after weight loss. The surgeon decides whether combining is safe for you based on your health and the total length of surgery.
