Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of a hair transplant?

A hair transplant carries the risks of any skin procedure, including bleeding, infection, swelling, numbness of the scalp and a reaction to the local anaesthetic. Some people have temporary thinning of existing hair around the grafts, and some grafts may fail to grow. Results vary between people and cannot be guaranteed. The dermatologist explains how these risks apply to you before you decide.

Does FUE leave a scar?

FUE leaves many tiny round marks across the donor area rather than a single line. With hair grown to a normal length they are usually hidden, but they can show if the back of the head is shaved very short.

How many grafts will I need?

The number of grafts depends on the size of the thinning area, the density you are aiming for and how much hair the donor area can safely supply. The dermatologist gives you a plan after examining your scalp; no number is promised in advance, because the final count depends on the grafts that can be harvested on the day.

Will the transplanted hair fall out?

Transplanted hair usually sheds in the first weeks after a hair transplant, and this is expected. The follicles stay in the scalp and start growing new hair over the following months. Your original hair can continue to thin with age, which is why medical treatment is often continued alongside a transplant.

Does a hair transplant hurt?

A hair transplant is done under local anaesthetic, so the main discomfort is the stinging of the numbing injections at the start. Afterwards the scalp feels tight and tender for a few days, and simple pain relief is usually enough.

Can women have a hair transplant?

Women can have a hair transplant when thinning is limited to certain areas and the donor area at the back of the scalp is dense. Diffuse thinning across the whole scalp is usually better suited to medical treatment, PRP hair therapy or mesotherapy, and the dermatologist explains which applies to you.

When can I go back to work after a hair transplant?

Your return to work after a hair transplant depends on your job and how visible the healing scalp is. Desk work usually resumes sooner than outdoor, dusty or physically heavy work, and the dermatologist gives you a timeline for your case.
