Labiaplasty in Sharjah

What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is an operation on the labia minora, the two thin folds of skin that sit inside the outer lips (labia majora) and surround the vaginal and urinary openings. The labia minora vary widely from woman to woman in length, colour and shape, and it is common for one side to be longer than the other. That variation is part of normal anatomy.
The labia minora are rich in nerve endings and blood vessels, so the operation is planned to keep a natural edge and leave enough tissue to protect the openings they cover. The aim is a shape that sits comfortably, agreed between you and your gynaecologist before the day. At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, labiaplasty is carried out in-house by the gynaecology and obstetrics team.
Labiaplasty works on the inner lips only. Adding volume to the outer lips is a different procedure, described on the labia majora augmentation page.
Who needs it
Women ask about labiaplasty for physical and personal reasons. Physical reasons include:
- rubbing or chafing against underwear, sportswear or seams
- pain or tugging during cycling, horse riding, running or intercourse
- difficulty keeping the area clean, or repeated irritation
- one side noticeably longer than the other after childbirth or with age
Some women simply feel self-conscious about how the labia look. That is a valid reason to ask, and the consultation is private and unhurried. The gynaecologist examines the area, asks what bothers you most, and explains what the operation can change. Where irritation is the main complaint, simple measures such as looser cotton underwear, gentle washing with water and treating any skin condition are covered first.
The procedure is offered to adult women whose bodies have finished developing, since the labia change shape through adolescence. The decision is yours, and there is no pressure to decide at the first visit.
What happens
Labiaplasty is often done under local anaesthetic, with or without light sedation, and some women choose a general anaesthetic; the options are agreed with you beforehand. You lie on your back as for a gynaecological examination.
The gynaecologist marks the planned new edge while you are awake so you can see and agree it. Two techniques are used, and the choice depends on your anatomy:
- Edge trim: the excess length along the free edge of each labium is removed, which also takes away darker or uneven edge tissue.
- Wedge technique: a V-shaped section is taken from the thickest part of the labium and the edges are joined, which keeps the natural edge and its colour.
Where a fold of the clitoral hood is prominent alongside the labia, it can be reduced at the same time. The wounds are closed with fine dissolving stitches. Labiaplasty is usually a day case, and you go home once you are comfortable and have passed urine.
Preparing for it
A consultation, examination and a short health check come first, with blood tests if your health history calls for them. Tell the team about all medicines, particularly blood thinners and supplements that affect bleeding. If sedation or general anaesthesia is planned, you receive fasting instructions and need someone to take you home.
Choose a date away from your period. Stopping smoking helps healing. Have loose cotton underwear, soft sanitary pads, a cold pack wrapped in a cloth, and a jug or hand shower for rinsing ready at home. Loose, flowing clothing such as an abaya is comfortable during recovery. If you plan the procedure around Ramadan or a family occasion, mention it early.
Afterwards
Swelling and bruising are expected, often more on one side than the other, and they settle gradually over the following weeks. The final shape becomes clear once the swelling has gone. A cold pack wrapped in cloth for short spells, rest with your hips slightly raised, and pain relief as advised all help in the first days.
Rinse the area with plain water after using the toilet and pat it dry gently. In the Sharjah heat, loose breathable clothing and staying in cool rooms keep the area comfortable. Tight clothing, cycling, riding and intercourse wait until your gynaecologist has checked the healing at your follow-up appointment. Most desk work can resume sooner than active or physical jobs.
Contact the hospital urgently if the swelling increases sharply on one side, if a wound opens, or if you have spreading redness, a foul discharge or a fever. **Go to the emergency department straight away if bleeding keeps soaking through pads despite firm pressure, or you are unable to pass urine.**
Cost and insurance
Labiaplasty is usually a cosmetic procedure and is therefore self-pay in most UAE insurance plans. Where the labia cause a documented medical problem, a plan may consider it with pre-approval, but cover is uncommon. Frequently asked questions
What are the risks of labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty carries risks including bleeding, a collection of blood under the skin, infection, a wound that separates as it heals, altered sensation and a result that is uneven or removes more or less tissue than planned. Scar tenderness can make intercourse uncomfortable for a time. Your gynaecologist explains how these risks apply to you before you decide.
Are my labia normal?
Labia vary widely in size, shape and colour, and differences between the two sides are common. A gynaecologist can examine you and reassure you about your anatomy, whether or not you go on to have labiaplasty.
Does labiaplasty affect sensation?
Labiaplasty is planned to protect the nerves and blood supply of the labia, and the clitoris itself is left untouched. Temporary numbness or tenderness along the scar is common while healing, and a lasting change in sensation is possible, which your gynaecologist discusses with you.
Can I have labiaplasty under local anaesthetic?
Labiaplasty can often be done under local anaesthetic, sometimes with light sedation for comfort. General anaesthesia is available if you prefer it or if other procedures are combined.
Can I have a baby after labiaplasty?
You can have a vaginal birth after labiaplasty. The labia can stretch or tear during birth, as they can in any delivery, so tell your obstetrician about the procedure.
How soon will I see the final result of labiaplasty?
The final shape after labiaplasty appears once the swelling has fully settled, which takes several weeks and sometimes longer. Your gynaecologist reviews the healing at follow-up.
Is a consultation for labiaplasty private?
A labiaplasty consultation at Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah is private and confidential. You can bring a companion or ask for a chaperone during the examination.
