Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of a Strep A throat swab?

The risks of a Strep A throat swab are minimal. It causes a brief gag and a moment of discomfort, and it is safe for children of all ages, pregnant women and people with other health conditions.

Can a rapid strep test be wrong?

A rapid strep test can occasionally be negative when Strep A is present, which is why doctors often send a throat culture for children with a negative rapid result. A positive rapid test is usually reliable.

Why can't I just have antibiotics for a sore throat?

Most sore throats are caused by viruses, and antibiotics do not treat viruses. Taking antibiotics without need causes side effects and encourages resistant bacteria, so the swab helps make sure antibiotics are used only when Strep A is found.

Is there a blood test for strep throat?

Strep throat itself is diagnosed with a throat swab, not a blood test. A blood test called the ASO titre shows a recent strep infection and is used mainly when doctors suspect a later complication, such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation.

What if the swab is positive but my child has no symptoms?

Some people carry Strep A in the throat without being ill, and carriers usually do not need treatment. This is why the swab is taken only when symptoms suggest strep throat.

Is scarlet fever tested the same way?

Scarlet fever is tested with the same Strep A throat swab, because it is a strep throat infection accompanied by a characteristic rash. Treatment is the same antibiotic course.

When is my child no longer contagious with strep throat?

A child with strep throat usually stops being contagious after a short period on antibiotics, as advised by the doctor. Without treatment, the infection can spread for much longer, so keep your child home until the doctor says they can return.
