Thyroid Function Tests in Sharjah

Medically reviewed by Dar Al Kamal Team

Thyroid function tests are blood tests that measure TSH, the pituitary hormone that drives the thyroid, together with the thyroid hormones free T4 and free T3, to show whether the gland is underactive or overactive. Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah offers thyroid function tests in its 24-hour laboratory. Book an appointment on 06 599 7777.

Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of thyroid function tests?

Thyroid function tests carry the small risks of any blood draw: bruising, brief soreness, feeling faint and, rarely, infection at the needle site. The results themselves can mislead in some situations, such as recent serious illness, pregnancy or biotin use, which is why a doctor interprets them.

Can a normal TSH rule out every thyroid problem?

A normal TSH makes an underactive or overactive thyroid unlikely in most people, though it says nothing about thyroid nodules, which are found by examination or ultrasound. Rare pituitary conditions can also produce a misleading TSH, so doctors add free T4 when symptoms or other findings suggest it.

Why is my TSH abnormal when my free T4 is normal?

A raised TSH with a normal free T4 is called subclinical hypothyroidism, and a low TSH with normal thyroid hormones is called subclinical hyperthyroidism. These patterns are often mild and may settle, so doctors frequently repeat the test before deciding on treatment.

Does biotin affect thyroid results?

Biotin, common in hair, skin and nail supplements, can interfere with the method used to measure thyroid hormones and make results look falsely abnormal. Tell your doctor and the laboratory if you take it, and ask how long to pause it before testing.

Do thyroid results change during pregnancy?

Thyroid hormone levels change naturally in pregnancy, so doctors use pregnancy-specific ranges to interpret them. Women with known thyroid disease often need their treatment adjusted early in pregnancy, which makes testing soon after a positive pregnancy test worthwhile.

Can illness affect my thyroid results?

A recent serious illness, surgery or hospital stay can temporarily change thyroid results even when the gland itself is healthy. Doctors usually repeat the test once you have recovered before drawing conclusions.

Do I need to fast for a thyroid blood test?

You do not need to fast for a thyroid blood test, and eating has little effect on TSH or free T4. If other tests on the same request need fasting, follow the instructions for those.
