Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of tube feeding?

Tube feeding can cause diarrhoea, bloating or constipation, blocked or displaced tubes, and irritation or infection of the skin around a gastrostomy. Feed entering the lungs is a serious risk, reduced by sitting upright during and after feeds. Restarting feeding after severe malnutrition can shift blood salts, which is why feeds begin slowly under supervision.

Are supplement drinks the same as meal replacement shakes?

Oral nutritional supplements prescribed for malnutrition are different from diet shakes sold for weight loss. Prescribed supplements are designed to add energy and protein on top of meals for someone eating too little, and the dietitian chooses the type to suit the person's condition.

Can someone eat by mouth while tube fed?

Some people eat small amounts by mouth while tube fed, once a swallowing assessment confirms it is safe. The tube then covers the rest of their needs. The dietitian and the medical team decide this together for each person.

Can I give medicines through a feeding tube?

Many medicines can be given through a feeding tube, but some tablets must not be crushed and some interact with feeds. Ask the pharmacist or doctor for a liquid form or instructions for each medicine, and flush the tube with water before and after.

How long will I need supplement drinks?

The need for supplement drinks depends on why you are eating too little and how quickly your appetite and weight recover. The dietitian reviews you regularly and reduces supplements as ordinary food takes over.

Is tube feeding compatible with fasting in Ramadan?

People who need tube feeding are usually exempt from fasting because of their medical condition. If fasting matters to the person or family, discuss it with the doctor and dietitian, and with a religious adviser if helpful, so any decision is safe.

Can an overweight person be malnourished?

An overweight person can be malnourished, especially after rapid unplanned weight loss or a long illness that has reduced muscle. Screening looks at recent weight change and intake, alongside body size.
