Eczema and Psoriasis Treatment in Sharjah

What is eczema and psoriasis treatment?
Eczema and psoriasis treatment is a structured, stepwise plan for two long-term inflammatory skin conditions that look alike to many people and behave differently. Eczema is a leaky, easily irritated skin barrier with an itchy immune response, so the rash is dry, rough and scratched. Psoriasis is skin that renews itself far too quickly, so cells pile up into thick, well-defined, silvery plaques, often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.
Both are treated on the same principle: control the inflammation quickly, then keep it controlled with the least treatment that works. At Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah, the dermatology team sets the plan and adjusts it at follow-up visits.
| Step | Eczema | Psoriasis |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Emollients several times a day | Emollients and scale softeners |
| Flare control | Steroid or non-steroid anti-inflammatory creams | Steroid creams, vitamin D-type creams, scalp preparations |
| Severe or widespread | Tablets or injections that calm the immune system | Tablets or injections, including biologic medicines |
Who needs it
Treatment suits anyone whose itch disturbs sleep, whose rash keeps returning after over-the-counter creams, or whose skin cracks, weeps or becomes infected. It also suits people with psoriasis on the scalp, nails, face, genitals, hands or feet, where the condition affects daily life more than its size suggests.
Hand eczema is common in the UAE, driven by frequent washing, wudu before prayer, cleaning products and gloves worn for long shifts. Psoriasis with joint pain, morning stiffness or a swollen finger or toe is shared with a rheumatology consultation, because early treatment protects the joints. Children with eczema are often seen first through children's skin care.
What happens
The dermatologist asks about triggers, sleep, work, family history and every treatment used so far, then examines all of your skin, including the scalp and nails. Where a rash is patterned around jewellery, a watchstrap, perfume or work materials, skin allergy testing may be added to look for a contact allergy on top of eczema.
You leave with a written plan in two parts. The daily part covers bathing in lukewarm water, a soap substitute, and an emollient applied generously and often, smoothed downwards in the direction of hair growth. The flare part says which cream to use on which body area, and for how long.
Steroid creams are measured in fingertip units: the amount squeezed from the tip of an adult index finger to the first crease covers an area the size of two adult palms. This simple measure prevents both under-use and over-use. Face, folds and genitals get milder preparations than the palms and soles.
For widespread, severe or stubborn disease, the dermatologist may recommend tablets or injections that calm the immune system. Blood tests are done before these treatments start and at intervals afterwards, and injections are taught so you can give them at home.
Preparing for it
Bring all creams, ointments and tablets you use, including anything bought abroad or from a pharmacy, because some imported creams contain strong steroids that are left off the label. Note what triggers your flares: heat, sweat, stress, wool, certain foods, detergents, or the dry air of air conditioning.
Photograph your skin at its worst, because a flare may have calmed by the day of the appointment. For psoriasis, mention joint pain, weight changes, blood pressure, and any history of liver problems, since these guide the choice of tablets or injections.
Afterwards
Skin usually calms in stages. Itch often eases first, then redness and thickness. Keep using emollients when the skin looks clear, because a well-moisturised barrier is the main protection against the next flare. Step steroid creams down as your plan says, moving to weekend use on areas that tend to flare.
In the Sharjah summer, rinse off sweat and change out of damp clothes quickly, keep indoor air from getting too dry, and apply emollient after every shower and after wudu. During Ramadan, the dermatologist can fit tablet or injection timing around fasting.
Contact the hospital promptly if eczema becomes weepy, crusted with yellow crusts or painful, or if a new rash appears while on tablets or injections. **Go to the emergency department straight away if eczema suddenly develops clusters of painful punched-out sores with fever, or if psoriasis spreads to redden most of your skin with chills, shivering or feeling unwell.**
Cost and insurance
Most UAE insurance plans cover consultations, prescribed creams and follow-up for eczema and psoriasis as long-term medical conditions. Tablets and injections for severe disease, especially biologic medicines, almost always need pre-approval supported by the severity recorded at your visit and the treatments already tried. Emollients may be covered only in part. Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah can help you prepare the approval request on 06 599 7777.

Frequently asked questions
What are the risks of eczema and psoriasis treatment?
The risks of eczema and psoriasis treatment depend on the medicine. Strong steroid creams used for too long on the same area can thin the skin, and tablets or injections that calm the immune system can raise the risk of infection or affect the liver, kidneys or blood counts, which is why blood tests are part of the plan. Your dermatologist explains the balance of benefit and risk for each option.
Can eczema or psoriasis be cured?
Eczema and psoriasis cannot currently be cured, but both can usually be well controlled. Many children outgrow eczema, and many adults with psoriasis spend long periods clear or nearly clear on the right plan. The aim is control with the least treatment necessary.
Are steroid creams safe for eczema?
Steroid creams are safe for eczema when the right strength is used on the right area for the right length of time. Under-using them out of fear is a common reason flares drag on. Ask your dermatologist to write down how many fingertip units to use and for how many days.
What are biologic medicines for psoriasis?
Biologic medicines are injections that block one specific signal in the immune system that drives psoriasis. They are used for moderate to severe psoriasis, or when psoriasis affects the joints, and they are started after screening blood tests and an infection check.
Is psoriasis linked to other health problems?
Psoriasis is linked to joint disease, and moderate to severe psoriasis is associated with higher rates of heart disease, diabetes and raised cholesterol. Regular checks of blood pressure, weight, blood sugar and cholesterol are worthwhile if you have psoriasis.
Can food allergy cause eczema in adults?
Food allergy is an uncommon cause of eczema in adults, and cutting out foods without testing rarely helps and can harm nutrition. A contact allergy to something touching the skin is a more common hidden factor, and patch testing can check for it.
Does sun exposure help psoriasis?
Controlled sun exposure improves psoriasis for many people, but sunburn can trigger new plaques and raises skin cancer risk. In the UAE sun, brief early-morning or late-afternoon exposure is safer than the midday sun. Ask your dermatologist before relying on sunlight as treatment.
