Laryngoscopy in Sharjah

Medically reviewed by Dar Al Kamal Team

Laryngoscopy is a close-up examination of the voice box (larynx) and throat, most often done in clinic with a thin flexible camera passed gently through the nose after a numbing spray. Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah offers laryngoscopy with an ENT surgeon, usually at the same visit as your consultation. Book an appointment on 06 599 7777.

Frequently asked questions

Is laryngoscopy painful?

Flexible laryngoscopy is usually uncomfortable rather than painful, because a numbing spray is used and the camera is very slim. Some people feel pressure, a tickle or the urge to sneeze, and these pass once the camera is removed.

When can I eat after a laryngoscopy?

You can usually eat and drink once the numbness has fully worn off after a flexible laryngoscopy, and the team will tell you when to start. Begin with sips of water, and if anything still feels numb, wait a little longer.

Will I be put to sleep for a laryngoscopy?

Most laryngoscopies are done awake in clinic with only a numbing spray. A general anaesthetic is used only for a rigid laryngoscopy in theatre, usually when a biopsy is needed or a growth on the vocal cords is being removed.

What are the risks of laryngoscopy?

The risks of flexible laryngoscopy are small and include a brief nosebleed, gagging, sneezing or, rarely, fainting or a spasm of the vocal cords. Rigid laryngoscopy adds the risks of a general anaesthetic, a sore throat, a temporary change in voice and, rarely, damage to the teeth or lips. A camera examination may occasionally miss a small lesion, which is one reason your surgeon may advise a follow-up look.

Can laryngoscopy find throat cancer?

Laryngoscopy is the main way the voice box is checked for cancer, and most findings in people with hoarseness turn out to be benign. If a suspicious area is seen, a biopsy confirms the diagnosis, and treatment of cancer is arranged by referral to a specialist oncology centre.

Can I fly after a laryngoscopy?

You can usually fly soon after a flexible laryngoscopy because it is an outpatient examination with nothing left behind. After a rigid laryngoscopy or biopsy, ask your surgeon when it is sensible to travel, particularly if voice rest has been advised.

Can a child have a laryngoscopy?

Children can have a flexible laryngoscopy, often with a parent close by, when they have a hoarse voice, noisy breathing or a swallowing problem. Your ENT surgeon explains whether it suits your child's age and cooperation, or whether another approach is better.
