Frequently asked questions

Is interstitial lung disease the same as pulmonary fibrosis?

Interstitial lung disease is the broad group of conditions, and pulmonary fibrosis is the scarring that some of them cause. Some types of ILD are mainly inflammatory and can improve with treatment, while others are mainly scarring.

Can lung scarring be reversed?

Established scarring in the lungs usually stays, but inflammation often improves with treatment and anti-fibrotic medicines can slow further scarring. Finding and removing a trigger, such as birds or dust, is one of the most effective steps.

Can keeping pigeons or falcons cause lung disease?

Yes, regular contact with birds or feathers can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a type of ILD, in people who become sensitised. Tell your pulmonologist about birds at home, at work or nearby, and about feather pillows or duvets.

What are the risks of ILD tests and treatment?

The risks depend on the test or medicine: CT involves a small dose of radiation, bronchoscopy can cause a sore throat, cough or occasionally bleeding, and anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic medicines can cause stomach upset, liver changes or a higher chance of infection. Blood tests are checked during treatment, and your pulmonologist explains the balance of benefit and risk for you.

Why does my doctor need my old scans?

Old scans show whether changes in the lungs are new, stable or progressing, which guides both the diagnosis and the choice of treatment. Bring every previous chest X-ray and CT scan, however old.

Will I need oxygen at home?

Home oxygen is needed only by people whose oxygen levels fall at rest, during exercise or at night, which is measured with oxygen checks and walking tests. Where it is needed, the equipment is arranged through a supplier and your pulmonologist advises when and how to use it.

Can I fast during Ramadan with interstitial lung disease?

Many people with stable ILD can fast, but those on oxygen or on medicines that must be taken with food may need a different plan. Discuss fasting with your pulmonologist well before Ramadan so medicine timings can be reviewed.

Is ILD treatment covered by insurance?

Most UAE insurance plans cover ILD consultations, CT scans and lung function tests, while HRCT, bronchoscopy, anti-fibrotic medicines and home oxygen often need pre-approval. Confirm your cover with Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah on 06 599 7777.
