Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of a neck dissection?

A neck dissection carries risks including bleeding, infection, a collection of fluid under the skin, and a reaction to the anaesthetic. Nerve effects can include shoulder weakness or stiffness, a lopsided lower lip, and lasting numbness of the neck skin, and rarely a leak of lymph fluid that looks milky. Your surgeon explains how these risks apply to you before you decide.

Will a neck dissection affect my shoulder?

A neck dissection can cause shoulder stiffness or weakness when the accessory nerve that lifts the shoulder is stretched or removed. Early shoulder exercises and physiotherapy help, and in most operations the surgeon keeps this nerve.

Will I need radiotherapy after a neck dissection?

Radiotherapy after a neck dissection depends on what the laboratory finds in the removed lymph nodes and on the main tumour. Your surgeon explains the results and the recommended next step at your follow-up appointment.

Can the body manage without the neck lymph nodes?

The body manages well without the lymph nodes removed in a neck dissection, because lymph fluid finds other channels. Some swelling under the chin can last for a while as this happens.

Why is my neck numb after a neck dissection?

Numbness after a neck dissection comes from the small skin nerves that cross the operating area. Feeling often improves over time, and some numbness of the neck or earlobe can remain.

Will the neck dissection scar be visible?

A neck dissection scar is placed in a natural skin crease so it lies along the lines of the neck and usually fades over time. Protecting it from strong sun while it matures helps it settle.

Does a neck dissection mean the cancer has spread?

A neck dissection does not always mean cancer has spread. It is often done to check nodes that look normal on scans, because cancer cells too small to see can be found only under the microscope.
