Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of a pituitary tumour?

A pituitary tumour carries risks through the hormones it releases and through its size: excess prolactin, growth hormone or cortisol can affect fertility, bones, the heart and blood sugar, while a large tumour can press on the optic nerves and damage sight. Rarely, bleeding into the tumour causes a sudden severe headache that needs emergency care. Treatment and surgery each carry their own risks, which the team explains.

Is a pituitary tumour a brain cancer?

A pituitary tumour is almost always a benign adenoma, a non-cancerous growth of the gland itself. It sits below the brain rather than inside it, and it is treated for its effect on hormones and vision.

Will I need surgery for a prolactinoma?

Most prolactinomas are treated with tablets that lower prolactin and shrink the tumour, and surgery is needed only for a minority, such as when tablets are poorly tolerated or the tumour keeps growing. The endocrinology team monitors the response with blood tests and MRI.

Can a pituitary problem affect fertility?

A pituitary problem can affect fertility, because the pituitary sends the signals that drive the ovaries and testes, and high prolactin switches those signals down. Treating the pituitary cause often restores periods, sperm production and the chance of conception.

Can medicines cause a high prolactin level?

Several medicines raise prolactin, including some used for nausea, reflux, depression and psychosis, and a high prolactin result is always read alongside your medicine list. Stress, a recent breast examination and a difficult blood draw can also raise a single reading.

Will I need hormone replacement for life?

Hormone replacement for pituitary deficiency is usually long term, because the pituitary seldom recovers once its hormone-making cells are damaged. Doses are reviewed regularly and adjusted for illness, pregnancy and life stage.

Is diabetes insipidus the same as diabetes?

Diabetes insipidus is a separate condition from blood-sugar diabetes. It is a water-balance problem, usually from a lack of the pituitary hormone that tells the kidneys to hold water, and it causes large volumes of dilute urine and strong thirst with normal blood sugar.
