Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of UPPP sleep apnoea surgery?

UPPP carries the risks of throat surgery, including significant pain, bleeding in the days after the operation, infection, and a reaction to the anaesthetic. Less commonly, fluid or air can escape into the nose when swallowing or speaking, the voice or sense of taste can change, and the throat can feel dry or tight for a long period. Your surgeon explains how these risks apply to you before you decide.

Will UPPP cure my sleep apnoea?

UPPP reduces the narrowing behind the palate, and the result varies between people because apnoea often involves more than one level of the airway. A repeat sleep study after healing shows how much the apnoea has changed. Your surgeon will explain the realistic outcome for your situation before the operation.

Will I still need CPAP after UPPP?

Some people still need CPAP after UPPP, often at a more comfortable setting, while others are able to stop. The repeat sleep study after healing decides this, and CPAP should continue until that study has been reviewed.

Does UPPP stop snoring?

UPPP often makes snoring quieter because the tissue that vibrates is trimmed and tightened. Snoring can return over time, especially with weight gain, alcohol in the evening or a blocked nose.

How painful is UPPP recovery?

UPPP recovery is painful, and many adults find it more uncomfortable than they expected, with pain that often spreads to the ears. Regular pain relief taken before meals, frequent drinking and rest make it easier to manage.

What is the difference between UPPP and a tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy removes only the tonsils, while UPPP also trims the uvula and soft palate and tightens the side walls of the throat. UPPP usually includes removal of the tonsils when they are still present.

Is UPPP a day-case operation?

UPPP is usually followed by an overnight hospital stay, because people with sleep apnoea need their breathing watched while they sleep after a general anaesthetic. The anaesthetist and surgeon confirm the plan for your stay at the pre-operative assessment.
