Frequently asked questions

What are the risks of bladder diverticulectomy?

Bladder diverticulectomy carries the risks of bladder surgery, including bleeding, infection, bladder spasms and a reaction to the anaesthetic. Specific risks are a urine leak from the repaired bladder wall and, rarely, injury to the nearby ureter. Your urologist explains how these apply to you.

Does every bladder diverticulum need surgery?

Most bladder diverticula do not need surgery, especially small ones that empty well and cause no infections or stones. Treating the blockage that raised the bladder pressure is often enough.

Why is the blockage treated as well?

The blockage is treated as well because the high pressure it creates caused the pouch, and removing the pouch alone leaves that pressure in place. Treating both lowers the chance of a new pouch.

Can a bladder diverticulum hide a tumour?

A tumour can occasionally develop inside a bladder diverticulum, and it can be hard to see on scans. That is why the inside of the pouch is inspected with a cystoscope and the removed pouch is examined in the laboratory.

What does passing urine in two stages mean?

Passing urine in two stages means you empty your bladder, then soon need to go again as urine drains back from the pouch. It is a typical sign of a large diverticulum.

Will I go home with a catheter?

Many people go home with a catheter after bladder diverticulectomy while the bladder wall heals. The team shows you how to care for it and arranges its removal.

Can children have a bladder diverticulum?

Children can be born with a bladder diverticulum, often near the entry of the ureter, and it may be linked to reflux. Care is planned with the pediatric urology team.
