Frequently asked questions

What are the risks and limits of prenatal screening?

Prenatal screening carries no physical risk to the baby, because it uses only your blood and ultrasound. Its limits are in the results: screening gives a chance, never a certain answer, so a low-chance result can occasionally miss a condition and a high-chance result is often a false alarm. Screening also checks only for specific conditions. Diagnostic tests such as CVS and amniocentesis give definite answers but carry a small risk of miscarriage.

What is the difference between screening and diagnostic tests in pregnancy?

Screening tests, such as the combined test and NIPT, estimate the chance that a baby has a condition and are safe for everyone. Diagnostic tests, such as CVS and amniocentesis, test cells from the pregnancy and confirm whether the condition is present, and they are offered after a higher-chance screening result.

Is NIPT better than the combined test?

NIPT screens for Down syndrome and the other common trisomies more accurately than the combined test and gives fewer false alarms. The combined test comes with the NT scan, which also looks at the baby early, so the NT scan can be done whichever blood test you choose.

Is prenatal screening compulsory?

Prenatal screening is optional, and you can choose all, some or none of the tests after discussing them with your obstetrician. The anomaly scan is recommended for most pregnancies because it checks the baby's development as well as screening for conditions.

Can NIPT tell me the baby's sex?

NIPT can report the baby's sex from the DNA in your blood, and it is shared with you only if you ask for it. Tell the team beforehand whether you want to know.

What happens if my screening result is high chance?

A high-chance screening result means your obstetrician meets you to explain the finding and discuss the options, which may include NIPT, a diagnostic test or more detailed scans. A high-chance result is often followed by a normal diagnostic result, and every decision about further testing is yours.

Is prenatal screening the same as a 4D scan?

Prenatal screening is a medical check for chromosomal and structural conditions, whereas a 4D scan is an optional scan that shows moving images of your baby for bonding. A 4D scan is an extra and sits alongside the NT and anomaly scans rather than replacing them.
