Frequently asked questions

What are the risks and limits of bone and joint imaging?

Bone and joint imaging is low-risk. X-ray and CT use ionising radiation, with CT giving the higher dose, while MRI and ultrasound use none. Each scan has blind spots: X-ray shows soft tissue poorly, ultrasound cannot see inside bone, and some early fractures appear only on a repeat X-ray or on MRI.

Why did my doctor order an X-ray before an MRI?

An X-ray is usually ordered first because it quickly shows fractures, joint alignment and arthritis, and it sometimes answers the question on its own. An MRI is added when the X-ray is clear but a ligament, cartilage, disc or hidden bone injury is still suspected. Starting with an X-ray also helps the radiologist read the MRI.

My MRI shows wear and bulges. Does that explain my pain?

MRI findings such as disc bulges, meniscal wear and cartilage thinning are common in people of all ages who have no pain at all. Your doctor matches the MRI findings to your examination and symptoms to decide which, if any, are causing the problem.

Can a broken bone be missed on an X-ray?

Some fractures are hard to see on the first X-ray, especially small wrist bones, hairline fractures and stress fractures. When a fracture is still suspected, the limb is usually protected and imaged again after an interval, or an MRI or CT is arranged.

Do I need a scan for every sports injury?

Many sports injuries, such as mild sprains and muscle strains, are diagnosed by examination alone and settle with the right care. Imaging is arranged when a fracture, a complete tear or an injury that changes treatment is suspected, or when recovery is slower than expected.

Can I have an MRI if I have metal plates or a joint replacement?

Most people with metal plates, screws or joint replacements can have an MRI safely, although the metal can blur the picture close to it. Tell the team about every implant when the scan is arranged, and bring any implant card, so the safest and most useful scan can be chosen.

Is bone and joint imaging covered by insurance?

Most UAE insurance plans cover X-rays for injury or joint symptoms, while MRI and CT usually need pre-approval before the scan. Some plans set conditions for sports injuries. Dar Al Kamal Hospital, Sharjah can help you confirm your cover on 06 599 7777.
