Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a nephrologist and a urologist?

A nephrologist is a physician treating kidney function — filtering, blood pressure, electrolytes. A urologist is a surgeon treating structural problems — stones, blockages, prostate, bladder. Stone pain goes to urology; a rising creatinine goes to nephrology. Many patients see both.

My creatinine is slightly high — is that serious?

It needs assessment rather than alarm. A single raised result can follow dehydration or a recent illness. What matters is whether it is persistent and what the trend looks like over time — which is why bringing older results helps.

What is eGFR?

An estimate of how well your kidneys filter, calculated from creatinine alongside age and sex. It is the number used to stage chronic kidney disease and is reported on most routine blood tests.

Will I need dialysis?

Most people with chronic kidney disease never do. Many remain stable for the rest of their lives. Referral to a nephrologist is about protecting the function you have, not a step toward dialysis.

Can kidney damage be reversed?

Acute kidney injury is often reversible if the cause is treated promptly. Chronic damage generally is not — which is why early detection and slowing progression matter so much.

I have diabetes and feel fine — do I need my kidneys checked?

Yes, at least annually. Diabetic kidney disease develops silently over years, and the earliest sign is protein in the urine, detectable long before you feel anything or creatinine rises.

Are painkillers bad for my kidneys?

Regular anti-inflammatory painkillers — ibuprofen, diclofenac and similar — are a common and avoidable cause of kidney damage, particularly with existing kidney disease. Ask before taking them regularly, and tell any doctor, dentist or pharmacist that you have kidney disease.

Why does kidney disease cause anaemia?

Your kidneys produce the hormone that signals the bone marrow to make red blood cells. As function declines, that signal weakens. It is treatable.

What does protein in my urine mean?

It indicates the kidney's filters are leaking. It is both a marker of damage and a driver of further damage, so reducing it is a treatment target in its own right.

Is a kidney biopsy painful?

It is performed under local anaesthetic with ultrasound guidance. You will feel pressure rather than sharp pain, and you will be observed afterwards.

Which is better, haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis?

Neither is universally better. Haemodialysis is usually three sessions a week at a centre; peritoneal dialysis is done at home, often overnight, with more independence. The right choice depends on your medical situation, your work and your home circumstances.

Should I follow a low-protein diet?

Only under guidance. Dietary advice in kidney disease depends on your stage and blood results, and unsupervised restriction risks malnutrition. Your nephrologist will advise, with dietetic input where needed.
