Frequently asked questions

Is an anesthesiologist a doctor?

Yes — a specialist physician. They assess your fitness for surgery, deliver the anesthetic, and continuously monitor and manage your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and consciousness throughout the operation.

Will I feel anything during surgery?

Under general anesthesia you are unconscious and feel nothing. Under regional anesthesia the area is completely numb; you may feel pressure or movement but not pain.

Could I wake up during the operation?

Awareness under general anesthesia is extremely rare. Modern monitoring and drug delivery make it genuinely uncommon. If it worries you, raise it at your assessment.

Why can't I eat or drink before surgery?

Anesthesia suppresses the reflexes that stop stomach contents entering the lungs. Food or liquid in the stomach risks aspiration, which is serious. A breached fast means the operation is postponed for safety.

Should I take my usual medications on the day?

Some continue, some stop, some need an adjusted plan — particularly blood thinners and diabetes medications. You will be given specific instructions at your assessment. Never stop a blood thinner on your own initiative.

Should I mention my dental work?

Yes, always. The airway is managed through your mouth, and loose teeth, crowns and caps can be damaged. Knowing beforehand prevents it.

I snore heavily — does that matter?

Yes. It may indicate undiagnosed sleep apnea, which changes how you are managed during and after anesthesia. Mention it.

I felt very sick after a previous anesthetic — can that be avoided?

Often, yes. Tell your anesthesiologist. Preventive anti-sickness medication can be given before you wake rather than after you are already unwell.

How long until the anesthetic wears off?

You will be awake within minutes but judgement and coordination are impaired for longer than you feel. For 24 hours do not drive, operate machinery, sign legal documents or drink alcohol.

Can I go home alone after day surgery?

No. You need a responsible adult to take you home and ideally stay with you overnight.

Can I stay with my child until they are asleep?

Usually yes. Children are anesthetised with age-appropriate techniques and doses, and generally tolerate anesthesia well.

Does an epidural slow down labour?

A modern epidural provides effective pain relief while allowing labour to progress. Discuss it antenatally so the decision is made in advance rather than during labour.
